ROYAL ACADEMY

OF DANCE CLASSES

Our ballet program approaches the classic dance form with creativity and sensitivity, to refine the child’s natural ability within the context of ballet technique. Following the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus from Grade I through to Solo Seal, the graded classes include free movement and character work, with pointe work for the vocational levels. Students are prepared for optional RAD exams, where The School has earned an impressive record of excellence against international standards. All ballet classes are accompanied by a live pianist.

Ballet Examinations

Students attending more than one ballet class per week may be eligible to participate. Held in the Spring, these exams require instructor recommendation and extra classes.

Forms/fee schedule are given to appropriate classes in the Fall.

Required number of classes for RAD examinations:
Grade I - VII – two classes a week
Intermediate – three classes a week
Advanced I & II – four classes a week

Character work is a required component of the RAD grades I-VIII examinations. The style is based on the national dances of particular countries that have helped shape some of the major classical ballets of this day. Countries such as Russia, Poland and Hungary in ballets such as Swan Lake, Coppelia and Sleeping Beauty. It holds an extremely important and historical value to a dancer’s training. Students will need special heeled shoes for this form of dance, with the girls also requiring skirts. All of these items can be purchased at 509 Dance Wear.

All students who take RAD examinations are required to take at least one modern dance class per week.
